A distinction between oral traditions and written traditions will need to be made. Sacred texts as well as an oral tradition have been established through world religions. Many indigenous religions have only oral traditions that have not been written down. There are some indigenous people who do not have a written language and so their religious tradition is passed down orally from generation to generation. It is harder for an individual to study and stay connected when there is only oral tradition’s to follow.
